SOME GENERAL STATE VETERINARY AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF LEUCOSIS ERADICATION IN CONNECTION TO AN ACTION FOR DAMAGES

The authors deal in the article with the main state veterinary and economic aspects of leucosis eradication, in connection to an action for damages against a veterinarian. The dairy-farm lost leucosis free status after 8 years and in the following year the owner liquidated the dairy farm that was rather unprofitable until then. He indicated as the reasons for liquidation the leukosis re-infection and the uncertain time, result and high costs of eradication and demanded some tens of millions of forints as compensation for the liquidation of dairy farm from the veterinarian who, according to his opinion, was in default. The court and the authors tried to find the answer to the real reason of liquidation and whether the veterinarian was really in default and if yes, how.

CRANIAL TIBIAL WEDGE OSTEOTOMY (CWTO) FOR THE TREATMENT OF CRANIAL CRUCIATE LIGAMENT RUPTURE IN DOGS – DOMESTIC EXPERIENCES

We have successfully implemented a new diagnostic approach, and a new surgical reconstruction technique to canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture in two Hungarian small animal hospitals. The tibial compression test for the detection of cranial cruciate ligament rupture proved to be more sensitive that other diagnostic methods used to date. Cranial tibial wedg e osteotomy (CWTO) correction of the tibial plateau was applied to 68 cases of canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture with over 90% success rate. Under Hungarian circumstances we found the application of CWTO preferable over principally similar „tibial plateau leveling osteotomy” (TPLO), due to its effectiveness, and its much lower instrumentation and implantation costs. Based on the high rate of satisfaction from owners of dogs treated with CWTO in our practices, we suggest wider application of this method in Hungarian small animal hospitals.

Á. Pákozdy:
STATUS EPILEPTICUS IN DOGS AND ITS TREATMENT. LITERATURE REVIEW

Status epilepticus requires immediate treatment to prevent fatal systemic effects. Intravenous diazepam or midazolam should be administered without delay. Longer acting phenobarbital is used often in addition to benzodiazepines. Patients not responding to this pharmacologic approach are considered refractory, and additional drugs should be used involving intensive care. This article addresses the pathophysiology, clinical signs, pharmacologic and systemic management of status epilepticus.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ANALYSIS OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID IN THE DIAGNOSTICS OF CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DISEASES IN DOGS. PART 1. COLLECTION OF LIQUOR, INDICATIONS AND ANALYSIS OF LIQUOR

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is valuable in the diangostics of inflammatory diseases (bacterial, viral, fungal and protozoal) of the central nervous system (CNS). CSF examination is indicated in every patient with nervous tissue degeneration, demyelinating diseases, neoplasia. Useful information can be expected from CSF analysis in polyneuropahties, as well.
CSF analysis is not recommended in patients with metabolic abnormalities, obvious disc diseases, or trauma causing neurological signs.
The procedure for obtaining CFS is safe and relatively simple with proper technique.
History, physical examination and detailed neurological examination are essential elements in reaching a diagnosis of nervous system disease. CSF evaluation is a useful adjunct to the interpretation of these examinations, but rarely is diagnostic per se.
In this paper the authors review the literature, describe methodology for CSF collection and examination, and discuss abnormalitities seen in certain CNS diseases.
