DEPARTMENT AND CLINIC OF OBSTETRICS AND REPRODUCTION

Research activity of the department

Basically divided into 3 sections:

  • Prof. Solti and his team: Reproductive biotechnology including embryo transfer and related subjects (superovulation, splitting of embryos, cryopreservation, cloning by nuclear transfer, microinjection of early embryos etc.). Determination of hormones and some mycotoxins by ELISA, development of rapid on-farm immunoassays. Infertility of male animals; evaluation and treatment of infertile males in different species. Assisted reproductive technologies applied in different species. Computer assisted semen analysis.

  • Prof. Szenci and his team: Embryonic mortality, reproductive ultrasonography in cattle. Pregnancy-associated proteins. Calcium-metabolism in the peripartal period and uterine involution in cattle, respiration physiology of the newborn calf.

  • Prof. Huszenicza and his team: Effects of nutrition / feeding technology and energy metabolism on resumption of cyclic ovarian activity in the postpartum period and at the beginning of the breeding season (ruminants, horse). Endocrine and ovarian consequences of endotoxin/cytokine-mediated diseases (mastitis, metritis). Ovarian characteristics of pet ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

Laboratory for Andrology and Assisted Reproduction (LAAR)

(Head: Prof. Dr. Sándor Cseh DVM, Ph.D., DSc, Dipl. ECAR)

The LAAR was established in 1999 and has 3 important fields of activities: education, services and research. The lab is well-equipped for performing a wide variety of experiments/investigations and laboratory tests on the field of assisted reproduction (e.g. cryopreservation of gametes /semen, egg and embryo/, in vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, artificial insemination, oestrus synchronization, ovulation induction, etc.) and andrology (e.g. traditional and computer assisted semen analyses /CASA/, evaluation of fertilizing capability /potential breeding soundness/ of males, infertility treatment of male animals, different sperm treatment protocols, etc.).

Section for Reproductive Pathology and Clinical Endocrinology

(Head: Prof. Dr. Gyula Huszenicza DVM, Ph.D., Dipl. ECAR)

This section was established in 1989. They offer wide range of validated 3H- and 125I-RIA and ELISA techniques for assaying various hormones in blood (plasma or serum progesterone, 17-estradiol, eston sulphate, testosterone, cortisol, 3,3’,5-triiodothyronine, thyroxine, insulin, insulin-like growth factor-1, leptin and LH), milk (progesterone), feces (progesterone metabolites) and urine (cortisol). This unit is the professional organizer of an annual summer school-like PhD course system (Budapest Workshop for Young Endocrinologist), which is recognized as an official course of the European Society of Domestic Animal Reproduction (ESDAR), and the European College of Animal Reproduction (ECAR) nowadays.

Small Animal Clinic of Obstetrics and Reproduction

(Head: Dr. Julianna Thuróczy DVM, Ph.D., Dipl. ECAR)

The clinic provides a 24-hours service for small animal -primarily canine and feline- patients, which covers daily general ambulatory service (e.g. obstetrical ultrasonography, estrus detection and determination of optimal timing of mating, routine obstetrical surgery /spaying and castration/, vaginal plastic surgery /for vaginal prolapse and tumors/, removal of mammary tumors, artificial insemination, etc.) and non-stop emergency care (e.g. obstetrical aid for patients with dystocia, caesarean section, intensive care for pregnant bitches with metabolic disease). It also offers special consultation possibilities in different areas of canine and feline obstetrics such as pregnancy care, infertility evaluation, andrology and assisted reproduction, and neonatology.
