Short history of the department
The traditions carried on by today's department go back to the end on the last century, when the Veterinary School moved to its present location and an independent Department of Physiology was founded. In the early fifties, biochemistry became associated with the physiology department, and in 1958, a radioisotope unit was organized and added as well. Since then, the department has developed into a modern center for physiological and biochemical research and higher education in the field of veterinary medicine, and has become widely known.
The department is divided into four units (physiology, biochemistry, immunophysiology laboratory and the Kemény Armand Multimedia Laboratory-KML), each of which is responsible for teaching and research within a specified area. The head of the department generally coordinates the department's activities, while the leaders of the units organize their own teaching and research work independently. The scientific staff consists of 10 veterinarians, 1 biologist, 1 person-in-charge for the KML. Each year 3-4 undergraduate and 2-3 PhD students take part in the research and education programs in order to make the department more successful.

The department offers special undergraduate study programs and single-subject courses for postgraduate students in the field of molecular biology, endocrinology, cell biology, ruminant physiology, gene technology, radioisotope technics and computer statistics. One special resource, the interactive multimedia (video and computer animation) is used in the teaching of physiology in order to make the educational process more effective and successful. The KML is an independent learning facility with high standard multimedia equipment. The Department has developed a full course multimedia environment for teaching veterinary physiology. The lecture theatre is equipped with a high and data presentation system that allows projection of computer and video sequences while the students are in a well-lit environment.
